Navigating the Rails: A Guide to Traveling with Your Bicycle on French Trains
France, with its picturesque landscapes and charming villages, is a dream destination for cyclists. Traveling by train with your bicycle opens up a world of possibilities, allowing you to explore different regions without being confined to a single starting point. In this guide, I’ll walk you through the essential steps to seamlessly integrate your two-wheeled companion into your French rail adventure.
1. The SNCF: Research Train Policies
Before embarking on your journey, it’s crucial to understand the bicycle policies of the train company you plan to use. Different trains may have varying rules, ranging from specific reservation requirements to restrictions on certain routes.
2. Reserve Your Spot:
To ensure a smooth ride, it’s advisable to reserve a spot for your bicycle when purchasing your train ticket. This not only guarantees a space for your bike but also helps train operators manage the carriage load efficiently. However, all trains need not have a reservation. The train you see above runs down the Mediterranean coast. Living in Perpignan I could take this wonderful train down the coast to beautiful ports of Banyul sur Mer and Colioure. These local trains cost one euro and I never was without a safe, secure rack in the marked carriage indicated by a bicycle on the outside.
3. Packaging and Disassembly:
Some trains in France may require specific packaging or partial disassembly of your bicycle. Familiarize yourself with the train company’s guidelines on whether your bike needs to be enclosed in a bag or if specific parts must be removed. Being prepared will save you time and potential headaches. This is another way to get get your bike on a train. From Paris to London the Eurostar takes about two hours. Bikes can be taken on the Eurostar but the rules made me choose to take the ferry from Newhaven to Dieppe. This is also the ferry route utilized by the Avenue Verte the bike route connecting London to Paris.
4. Ticket Purchase:
When booking your train ticket, be sure to select the option indicating that you’ll be traveling with a bicycle. This ensures that the necessary arrangements and reservations are made for your bike. Sometimes the SNCF computer will indicate there is no bicycle availability. Don’t give up, I kept trying and found a special overnight train from Paris to Marseille. With my senior discount I found a bunk on the night train for $50, saving me a night in a hotel.
5. Arrive Early:
Give yourself ample time at the train station before departure. Arriving early allows you to navigate through the station, locate the designated bike carriage, and seek assistance from station staff if needed. Some train stations are a destinations in themselves. Especially in larger cities where you can find coffee, croissants, shops and good restaurants.
6. Securing Your Bicycle:
Once on board, follow the instructions provided by the train company for securing your bicycle. Most trains have designated areas or racks for bikes, and proper placement ensures a safe and hassle-free journey.
7. Foldable Bikes Advantage:
If you own a foldable bicycle, you may find your travels even more convenient. Many trains treat foldable bikes as regular luggage, eliminating the need for additional reservations and easing the boarding process. There are great bags for folding bikes. It’s been my experience one can always find a bike box from a bike shop as well. A well dismantled bike will usually be allowed on the train in the baggage compartment.
8. Enjoy the Ride:
With your bicycle securely stowed, relax and enjoy the scenic train journey through the French countryside. Be mindful of your fellow passengers and follow any additional instructions from train staff to make the experience enjoyable for everyone.
Traveling with a bicycle on trains in France opens up a world of possibilities for cyclists eager to explore the diverse landscapes of this beautiful country. By understanding and adhering to train policies, reserving your spot, and following these practical tips, you can seamlessly integrate your bicycle into your French rail adventure, ensuring a memorable low carbon footprint journey.
