France : Preparing for a Three-Month Bike Adventure
Embarking on a three-month bike trip to France promises an unforgettable adventure, blending the thrill of cycling with the enchanting landscapes and rich culture of this European country. For an easier journey, preparation is key. This guide will walk you through a few steps to ensure a smooth and enjoyable three-month bike exploration through France.
1. Route Planning:
Begin by outlining your route, considering both the scenic beauty and practical aspects. France offers a vast network of cycling routes, from coastal paths to mountain trails. Plan your itinerary, marking key destinations and allowing flexibility for unexpected discoveries.I planned my trip to follow regular train routes. This allows me a failsafe of sorts.
2. Check Your Gear:
Thoroughly inspect your bike and gear. Ensure your bicycle is in top condition, with well-maintained brakes, gears, and tires. Invest in a comfortable saddle, and carry essential tools for on-the-go repairs. Don’t forget to pack spare parts and a reliable bike lock. I discuss this in more detail in the blog about the bike I bought.
3. Pack Light:
As you’ll be on the road for an extended period, pack light but efficiently. Prioritize lightweight, moisture-wicking clothing, and versatile layers. Include camping gear if you plan to camp along the way, and a compact, high-quality tent. This is both very rewarding and very frustrating.. The best pack would be absolutely the bare minimum but this is hard. I enjoy taking high quality photos of the places I visit. I like to film with my drone as well. I bought a good quality point, and shoot only to realize I like a full camera with a view finder. So I compromised bringing my Nikon DSLR with a 55-200 telephoto and a nice 35mm fixed Lens this is heavier than the point and shoot but will produce better stills. I will not bring the drone. Drones are not allowed in Morocco anyway.
4. Documents and Insurance:
Organize your travel documents, including your passport, visa (if required), and any necessary permits. Consider travel insurance that covers both health emergencies and potential bike-related ) ' issues. Save digital copies of essential documents in a secure location.
5. Health and Fitness:
, Ensure you’re in good physical shape for the journey. Schedule a check-up with your doctor, update vaccinations if necessary, and carry a basic first aid kit. Plan your daily cycling distances based on your fitness level, allowing for rest days to avoid burnout.
6. Language Basics:
While many people in France speak English, especially in tourist areas, learning some basic French phrases can enhance your experience and interactions with locals. Carry a phrasebook or language app to assist you.,
7. Navigation Tools:.
Use a GPS device or use smartphone apps for navigation and train scheduling Download maps and consider a power bank to keep your devices charged. Familiarize yourself with local road signs and cycling regulations. I try to use GPS sparingly. It gives me a sense of accomplishment if I use as few electronics as possible. This is not completely possible in today’s world.
8. Accommodation Options:
Research accommodation options along your route. From charming bed and breakfasts to budget-friendly hostels, France offers a variety of choices. Booking some accommodations in advance provides security, but leave room for spontaneity. I use booking.com a great deal. Their rating system weeds out the bad apples. I use "airbnb" but usually for longer stays.

9. Budgeting:
Establish a realistic budget for your trip, considering daily expenses for food, accommodation, and occasional treats. Having a financial plan ensures you can fully enjoy the experience without unnecessary stress. Remember, youth hostels are not just for the young! Youth hostels can, on the other hand, can make one feel young. Another benefit of hostels is the camaraderie and exchange of information.
10. Emergencies:
Plan for emergencies. Save local emergency numbers, know the locations of nearby hospitals, and carry a list of contacts for family or friends.
A three-month bike trip through France holds the promise of incredible adventures and unforgettable memories. By carefully planning your route, checking your gear, and ensuring your health and safety, you can pedal through the enchanting landscapes of France with confidence. Bon voyage!
